The Sons of God in Gen 6:2-4

I. "And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2) That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. 3) And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. 4) There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown." (Gen 6:1-4)

II. There are two well known interpretations of who the sons of God were in Gen 6:2-4.

1. There are some that believe that they were the godly descendents of Seth.

2. There are some that believe that they were fallen angels.

III. I believe that the sons of God in Gen 6 were fallen angels for the following reasons:

1. The phrase "sons of God" is only used three other places (Job 1:6; Job 2:1; Job 38:7) in the Old Testament outside of Genesis 6 and they are all referring to angels.

A. Job 1:6 - Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

B. Job 2:1 - Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.

C. Job 38:6 - Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

D. Job 38:7 - When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

E. The angels (including fallen angels) are the sons of God by creation, as was Adam.

F. Luk 3:38 - Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.

2. Angels can materialize and appear as human men with bodies that can do physical things such as eat.

A. Gen 19:1 - And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

B. Gen 19:2 - And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.

C. Gen 19:3 - And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

D. Dan 9:21 - Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.

3. In Gen 6:1, men on the face of the earth had daughters born unto them. In Gen 6:2, when men were having daughters born unto them, the "sons of God" saw that the "daughters of men" were fair.

A. The "sons of God" are set in contrast to "men" in Gen 6:1-2.

B. Gen 6:1 - And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

C. Gen 6:2 - That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

4. If the "sons of God" were Sethites, were there no fair women among the Sethites that they could take for wives?

A. We know that there were no female angels that the angels could take for wives (Mat 22:30), which makes Gen 6:2 make more sense for the fallen angel position than for the Sethite position.

B. Mat 22:30 - For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

5. If the "sons of God" in Gen 6:2,4 were the godly Sethites and the "daughters of men" were the wicked Cainites, why would their offspring with those alleged wicked women be giants and mighty men of renown (Gen 6:4)?

A. Why would they be any different from any other human children?

B. Why were the other children of the Sethites not giants?

6. Jude speaks of angels that kept not their first estate (their normal state or nature - see definition below) and left their habitation "even as" (in like manner as) the men of Sodom and Gomorrha who gave themselves over to fornication and went after strange (foreign - see definition below) flesh (Jude 1:6-7).

A. Jud 1:6 - And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

B. Jud 1:7 - Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

C. Estate n. - 1. a. State or condition in general, whether material or moral, bodily or mental. In ME. occas.: Constitution, nature. arch.; now almost exclusively in Biblical phrases. (Oxford English Dictionary)

D. Strange adj. - I. 1. a. Of persons, language, customs, etc.: Of or belonging to another country; foreign, alien. (Oxford English Dictionary)

E. In other words, some of the fallen angels left their constitution and nature and went after "strange flesh" (human women - Gen 6:2-4) even as (in like manner as) the men of Sodom did to people (men) who were not given to them.

IV. Putting it all together, I am convinced that the sons of God that went into unto the daughters of men were fallen angels that materialized into human bodies and had sex with human women and created superhuman offspring.

1. In that the angels that did so were bound in everlasting chains until judgment day (Jud 1:6), I am not convinced that it is still happening today.

2. Jud 1:6 - And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
